How about having a warlord as your landlord
when visiting Panicale? Boldrino Paneri was born in 1331,
and reading history books written by the locals, he was
portrayed as a brave hero who led the Vatican army under
Gregory XI and Urban VI. But if you read history books written
by inhabitants of towns he was not on friendly terms with,
other facts emerge... There, he is portrayed as a mercenary
tyrant who had to be paid to stay away from these towns.
Rest assured, Boldrino is a myth of the past and has been
replaced by more peaceful landlords. They are Riccardo,
a retired airline pilot, and his wife Mariolina. Stories
of their travels around the world will have to replace stories
of battles, conquests and plundering.
On the outside of the house, little has changed since Boldrino
lived here 700 years ago, with his coat of arms still visible.
On the inside, however, you will find a newly restored two-bedroom
property. It still features the traditional cotto floors
and wooden beams, but has been fitted with all necessary
modern conveniences. Red bricks and arches are visible,
as are many other details from the 14th century building.

From the apartments living room there is
a beautiful view over the small and charming piazza, the
village's 17th century church and down to the water fountain
at the main square. The living room is equipped with armchairs,
1940s furniture and a large dining table that sits six.
Here, you will also find a colour tv-set. On the wall facing
a bedroom, a redbrick arch that has been closed off a couple
of centuries ago is visible and adds to the character of
both rooms.
On the other side of the arch is a bedroom with two single
beds. It also faces the small piazza. The Master bedroom
has a double-bed is situated at the end of the hallway,
facing a quiet alley. Both bedrooms have solid shutters,
to keep them dark, cool and quiet when needed, and a mixture
of modern and 1940s furniture.
The bathroom is fully tiled and has both shower and a bathtub.
It is further equipped with a washing machine. Apart from
the bathroom there is also a WC. The kitchen is small but
has all you need in the form of an electric oven, a four-hub
gas stove and a fridge freezer. This apartment comfortably
sleeps 4 adults, and can - because of the central heating
- be rented all year round. You are welcome to stay without
having to worry of visits from its past occupiers…
